Welcome to Steve Dickie Guitars.

Number of instruments I've built in the last 42 years as of April, 2005: 4 steel strings, 4 classicals, and 1 mandolin

I've been playing guitars since 1976, but it wasn't until 1999 that that my long time interest in woodworking and my love of music came together. With the completion of the first guitar, the bug was here to stay.

So in 1999, Steve Dickie Guitars was founded. Although I work alone on each instrument, I enjoy the company of several friends who share an interest in lutherie. It has been my experience that having peers to bounce ideas off is a great asset along the road of creativity. I find that I learn something with each guitar I build. There is lots of published information on how to build guitars and much of it is contradictory. The modern craft of lutherie sits somewhere in the middle of science, art and alchemy. From all that, I still manage to produce a product that looks, sounds and feels pretty good (in my opinion).

I'm not "schooled" in lutherie, nor have I apprenticed with an established luthier. My knowledge of the subject comes largely from the book "Guitarmaking: Tradition and Technology" by William Cumpiano and Jonathan Natelson. This book is now considered the modern day standard reference for new luthiers. More information on it and on Cumpiano's work can be found on his website at www.cumpiano.com

My goal in creating an instrument is to build something that people will love to pick up and play.

Please take a look around the site and feel free to contact me with any questions. If you want to see what I'm working on now, check out the "current work" link at the left. I update this site often.
