  • PSV plates are assigned to for-hire vehicles hauling goods belonging to a 3rd party. Manitoba plates with CAVR or Apportioned decals are found on trucks or buses which travel regularly outside the province.
  • Blue on clear CAVR stickers used from 1997 until March 1, 2001, when Manitoba joined IRP. Existing CAVR plates affected by the change received new Apportioned stickers (featuring blue vertical bars) to be added by the motorist to their existing CAVR-stickered plate, such as PAF 712. New registrations after 3-1-01 received a single Apportioned sticker, applied only to the plate with the date stickers. Rear plate has no stickers at all.
  • PSV Driveaway is the Manitoba version of the Transporter or In-Transit permit used for one-time movements of large trucks and buses. Transporter/Driveaway companies can keep their floater plate and keep renewing in the normal manner, or apply for plates on an as-needed basis. To differentiate the class, a special DA sticker is applied to the upper left corner of a regular PSV plate. Like their CT cousins, DA-stickered PSV plates are very scarce. Only 58 were registered in July 2009.
  • Observations have indicated that there are indeed a few PB class Apportioned plates to be found. I have observed at least twelve (12) of these plates and more are being spotted all the time. If anyone sees a bus with a Manitoba PB class plate and a CAVR or Apportioned decal on it please inform me at once.
  • NEW DISCOVERIES! PSV BUS with CAVR sticker spotted in February 2010 and later in the year, the short-lived Apportioned sticker with blue vertical bars on a PB plate. Photos above. Thanks to Pat Rogoski for spotting and photographing these two unique (or so I believe) plates.

  • These large plates are mostly used on larger commercial or truck trailers, while personal use (i.e. boat, camper) trailers receive the small TL plates.
  • FEB 03 S-TL (Semi-Trailer) five-year base follows same format as 1988-1998 five-year bases but with Waldale dies.
  • The white SEMI trailer plate was introduced by February 2003. This permanent plate follows the trend of most provinces and states to only pro-rate fees on the power unit as per the IRP signing of 2001.
  • The initial batch of SEMI plates was made by Hi-Signs in the SG-SL range. Waldale-made plates followed around 2005 starting at SM, skipping past SN and SP then to SR followed by SX.
  • Only a small number of CT-TL (Commercial Trailer) plates were made with Hi-Signs dies in the CPL, CRL and CSL series.
  • In April 2008, the CAL-CZL range for commercial trailers was exhausted and a new numbering format appeared, with the letter L now appearing in the second position and starting with the CLA series. As of October 2008 (a mere 6 months after appearance of new format) we had already reached the mid-CLB series.
  • PSV trailer plates are very scarce. Letters always begin with P and end with L. The first PSV-TL plate issued in 1997 was PAL 001 and by 2007 we had only reached PAL 222 (see the highs website for the latest info), making this an extremely low-issuance type. PAL 304 current (March 2010) Winnipeg high and PAL 552 issued in rural areas.
  • Apportioned variations discovered on both CT and PSV trailers in 2009. The ones photographed and shown in use above are the only ones I've seen.

  • Most CT plates used on various small commercial vehicles like pickups, service vehicles, work trucks, electrician's vans and the like. These are very common plates. Some exist with the redundant T sticker in upper left.
  • A small number of CT plates (CDA-CDB series) were produced with Hi-Signs dies. A very small number of these were issued with APPORTIONED or T stickers; none were issued with DA stickers.
  • Commercial Driveaway is the Manitoba version of the Transporter or In-Transit permit for non-PSV trucks and buses. A special DA sticker is applied to the upper left corner of a regular CT plate. Contrasting with the regular CT version, DA plates are very scarce. Only eight (8) were registered in July 2009. Extra-provincial version not carried over from the 1983 base.
  • CT plates with CAVR or Apportioned stickers are used by motorists hauling their own goods as opposed to their vehicles being used to transport the goods of others (PSV).
  • As with the more common PSV Apportioned, blue on clear CAVR stickers were used from 1997-2001, then followed with an Apportioned sticker after 2001. Existing CAVR plates affected by Manitoba's post-2001 participation in IRP received a new Apportioned sticker (featuring blue vertical bars) to be added by the motorist to the existing CAVR-stickered plate.
