Baptism Interview Team

A member of the Baptism interview team meets privately with each family seeking Baptism.  They discuss what it means for parents to be the first teachers of the faith for their child and the place of Baptism in their family life. The purpose of Baptism, signs and symbols of the sacrament, and the role of godparents are also reviewed. Team members are practicing Catholics who are welcoming, caring, and compassionate, with strong communication skills and an awareness of human development and the spiritual journey.

Baptism Preparation Team

Members of our Baptism Preparation Team facilitate an evening session for parents and godparents.  This includes presentation, small and large group discussion, a video, and a tour of the baptism area of the church.  Ministry members assist at Baptism celebrations two or three times a year. Qualifications include being a practicing Catholic and having group facilitation skills and an interest in working with families with young children.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) – Sponsor

In the RCIA process, candidates and sponsors journey together in preparation for the sacraments of initiation. Sponsors provide spiritual support and information, participate in weekly meetings with candidates and the RCIA team, discussions, presentations, faith, and prayer.  Sponsors are practicing Catholics with some knowledge of the faith, a willingness to share their faith experience, and a commitment to the candidate and the task. Individual and small group training is provided.  The pastoral team and ministry leaders offer supervision, formal, and informal evaluation.

Sunday Home Program

Grade-school children educated outside the Catholic school system gather weekly, from October to early May, to learn about our Catholic faith.  Volunteers (e.g., parents of participants, other adults, and high school students) teach small groups of students for an hour a week, plus preparation time, on rotation.  New teachers are paired with experienced individuals.  An excellent planning manual is available, and teachers receive support from the ministry leader and peers.  Diocesan resource materials are also provided.  All are screened according to procedures outlined by the Diocese of Hamilton.
