All
ministries follow the Diocese of Hamilton’s
volunteer screening initiatives.
Bingo Volunteers
Every
parish needs fundraising volunteers! Our bingo
volunteers work at bingo halls twice a month (Monday
mornings) to sell cards, books, and perform other
support tasks. Comfort in working with numbers, a
pleasant manner, and willingness to make a regular
commitment are essential. Training is provided.
Eucharistic Ministers to the Sick
Eucharistic ministers to the sick bring Communion
and a caring presence on behalf of our parish family
to parishioners who cannot attend our Sunday
celebrations because of illness or age. Eucharistic
ministers are usually mandated by the Diocese, have
a deep spirituality and reverence for the Eucharist,
and are responsive to the needs and interests of
others. In special cases, individuals may be
granted permission to bring Eucharist to a family
member.
Pastoral Visitors to the Sick
Members
of this ministry work in pairs to visit the sick and
elderly and bring them the prayerful support of the
parish community. Key qualities for this ministry
are respect for the wishes of others, the ability to
listen compassionately to another’s feelings and
concerns, willingness to share one’s faith without
being domineering or boastful. Training and ongoing
support are provided. All volunteers are screened.
Support to Residents of Sunnyside Home
Two groups
provide chapel service assistance to residents of
Sunnyside Home on behalf of our parish community.
One includes leaders of the Roman Catholic Word and
Communion Services held on the first three Thursdays
every month. These are Eucharistic ministers
specially trained by the parish to conduct these
liturgies.
The
second group consists of volunteers selected,
trained, supervised, and evaluated by Sunnyside’s
volunteer services. They bring residents to the
chapel for Word and Communion Services and to the
monthly celebration of Eucharist. Volunteers may
serve as lectors. Those who are Eucharistic
ministers help distribute communion at these
liturgies or bring Eucharist to the rooms of those
unable to attend chapel. Volunteers are practicing
Roman Catholics who are compassionate, in good
health, and have an interest in dealing with the
elderly.
Volunteer Drivers
Once
a month, these volunteers provide rides to and from
Mass to Drivers need a valid driver’s license,
appropriate insurance, a review of our parish
guidelines for drivers, and to be punctual, helpful
and courteous. |
