A member of my congregation who works in downtown Newark, New Jersey,
carries cards listing the names, addresses and telephone numbers of three nearby
shelters and feeding programs. He figures that if one in fifty of the homeless
he sees heads for a shelter, he has done a good deed.
The Women's Club of New York City publishes an easy-to-use directory of
shelters for homeless women. Consider issuing such a directory for your area.
To find shelters and transitional housing programs in your community, look
in the Yellow Pages of your phone book under Social and Human Services or
Volunteer Services. Or contact your local church, synagogue, or social service
agencies.
