PAPER MONEY

The first "Paper Money" of Poland is considered to be the Treasury Notes issued during the Kosciuszko Uprising in 1794.  Later, during the 1800's, other paper money was issued under Russian Occupation.  After several Polish uprisings, Russian money replaced the so-called "Polish" currency of the Russian occupation.

GERMAN OCCUPATION OF WW I.
The Germans issued paper money for use in occupied Poland.  The center of this administration was the "General Government Warschau".  Local use of these notes continued for a time in Poland after the surrender of Germany on November 11, 1918.

Early Issues of the 2nd Republic 1918-1923
In late 1918, Poland adopted the Polish mark in areas formerly occupied by Germany and the Koruna in the areas formerly occupied by Austria.  Russian currency and German occupation money was also used for a short time in some localities.  The Polish mark soon became the standard, and continued to be used until the full re-introduction of the Zloty system by 1924. Many cities also issued money during this period due to the uncertainty of the monetary system.
Some areas were subject to plebiscites in 1920-21 and some notes were also issued locally for temporary use until the vote was held.

Poland experienced hyper-inflation during this time as evidenced by the very large denominations of up to 100,000,000 marks.

Some of these notes were overprinted with Polish patriotic slogans of the Arima Krajowa (Polish Home Army).  Many forgeries exist of these overprints.
