The selfish nature of passion is apparent in the movie, The English Patient. Two people love each other so much, one of them risks democracy to save the other. People die because of this love. That's selfish.
I think that is the appeal of the romance genre. In a normal person's life, passion and love aren't tested in extreme ways. We want to think we know passion but we don't. And it's just as well because we can go home from a movie like this smugly thinking "If that's what passion is, I'm glad I don't have it."
