Loretto Reid Band
A Celtic family bonanza
Canadian Celtic music just wouldn’t be as fierce, innovative, or beautiful without Brian Taheny and Loretto Reid. Originally from Sligo, Ireland, the husband-wife team now resides in Goderich. Together, they play an astonishing array of instruments: Reid blows her whistles and flutes with incredible lung power and stamina, and Taheny nonchalantly plays just about every stringed instrument in existence. Their style is firmly based in traditional Irish music, but both musicians like to tweak it a little bit, bringing in electric guitar solos to punk-up “King of the Fairies” or washing the gentle melody of “From the Inside Out” with atmospheric sounds and a slight beat. To fully appreciate their talents, Reid and Taheny must be seen live, when they get their children, Leon and Rowena, to add to the instrumentation and a step dancer to contribute more percussion. Both musicians can be found in the local Celtic scene, especially at the Goderich Celtic Festival, where they contribute their talents to workshops and lessons. I highly recommend their two most recent albums, Celtic Mettle and From the Inside Out.
