C. A. M. H. History

Welcome to our History Page, on this page you will find basic information about the history of the Cambridge Association for the Mentally Handicapped.

On January 14, 1954,  interested parents, enthusiastic community groups, and representatives of the Brantford Association  were brought together through the hard work of Alma Cole, a parent and Florence Malcolm, a teacher. As a result of that meeting the South Waterloo Association for Retarded Children was formed.

   C. A. M. H. has grown from a school with a principal and one teacher for twelve children to an agency providing a wide range of services for approximately 400 individuals of all ages.

Through the years the name has changed to reflect current programs and philosophies. From 1954 to 1964 we were known as the South Waterloo Association for Retarded Children. In the year 1965 we changed our name to  The South Waterloo Association for the Mentally Retarded, it remained so until 1972, when we became the Cambridge Association for the Mentally Retarded. In 1990 we changed our name to our current name, the Cambridge Association for the Mentally Handicapped.
