VIA Rail
Every day, I used to witness the westbound Canadian speeding along the CP Keewatin Sub at Lydiatt, Manitoba, near my hometown of Beausejour. Sadly, that train was moved off the CP line on January 15, 1990. My era of 1989 safely preserves the operation of this train along the southern CP mainline across the west.

This is a steam generator unit, frequently seen in the winter or on trains with blue steam heated cars being pulled by F40PH-2s that had no steam lines. This particular model was made from a heavy grey resin kit from the now-defunct Miniature Locomotive Works in St. Jean, Quebec. Athearn Express Reefer trucks 53308. |

In 2003, Walthers released a series of stainless steel 1950s Budd Streamliners decorated in various paint schemes including CPR and modern VIA. The "Budd dome coach" model appears to be a very close match to the Skyline cars CPR commissioned in 1955 on the Canadian and still used by VIA today. They were updated with "CP Rail" markings in the late-1960s, and then with VIA in 1978. VIA updated their paint scheme in 1998 with rather gaudy "Canada" wordmarks and large flags, and the Walthers model released in 2003 reflected this paint scheme. Note this version was re-released in late 2007.
In order for me to get a circa-1989 model of one of these cars I started with a Santa Fe car, painted the underbody black, painted the interior blue, changed the direction of the seats in the dome, removed the lettering and then added VIA decals from 2-3 Microscale VIA sets. Note you will need to make your own VIA decal on one side of the car as the post between the end windows is too narrow for the Microscale small yellow VIA logo. |

This is the E-series sleeper car sometimes seen in late-80s consists of the Canadian, usually right before the Park car. Model is the popular Rapido Trains version, so it's as accurate as can be expected. |

For the Park car, Con-Cor is still the best option available. This one is my last remaining Con-Cor car, the Revelstoke Park. I added correct weight, metal wheels and the usual attention to trucks and couplers. I also decalled this car myself from an undecorated one. |
