Most people associate John Stainer with his Oratorio The Crucifixion (from which comes the anthem God So Loved the World). However he wrote a lot of church music, much of which when he was master of the music at St. Paul's Cathedral in London. In addition to several anthems which are well known to choirs, and some of the best-known hymn tunes, Mr. Stainer has written longer works, not least Lord thou art God - a fine work of over 15 minutes.
Four of Mr. Stainer's original hymns appear in Common Praise (e.g. In Dulci Jubilo, Love Divine), in addition to the popular arrangment of The First Nowell, for which he is responsible. Two of his chants appear in the Anglican Chant Psalter, and one in the Canadian Psalter.
