Hopkins began his musical career by singing in the choir at the Chapel Royal. He later played the organ at Mitcham, Surrey; St. Peter’s, Islington; and St. Luke’s, Berwick Street. In 1843, he became organist at Temple Church in London, a position he held for over half a century. In 1882, the Archbishop of Canterbury awarded him an honorary Doctor of Music. In 1855, with Edward Rimbault, The Organ: Its History and Construction was published. Hopkins also composed various chants and hymns, of which the tune Ellers is contained in Common Praise.
