Sir William Harris studied with Parrott, Wood, and Davies, eventually serving as assistant to Davies at the Temple Church, London. After several appointments in London and at Litchfield Cathedral, Harris became director of music for the chapel of New College, Oxford. In 1929 he moved from New College to Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, and from there to the Chapel of St. George, Windsor Castle. Though best known as a fine choir trainer, he was a composer of merit and firmly entrenched in the conservatism of the Anglican tradition. He provided works for the coronations of both 1937 and 1953.
Both The Canadian Psalter and The Anglican Chant Psalter contain chants by Harris, and the red hymnal contains two of his hymn tunes, including Alberta ("Lead, Kindly Light") which he wrote in 1924 on a long train journey through Alberta.
